Dok-do island

The possession of the Dok-do island has been an issue between Korea and Japan. Dok-do island belongs to Korean territory, but recently Japan started arguing that Dok-do island belongs to Japan. The history goes back to the time when Japanese government conquered Korea, but still in the old Japanese map, Dok-do was marked as a Korean territory. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Japanese government is claiming for the ownership of the island and and even distorting history; they have included it in their textbook, and taught children that Korean people are illegally living in their island. Sadly, 97% of the world map marks Dok-do as 'Sea of Japan' and only 3% of the world map marks 'East Sea' which is in Korea.
The nation of Korea might be smaller and powerless than Japan; however, it does not mean that Korean people are weak. Korean people are fighting against this incorrect history and against Japanese government in many ways. What is important is that Korean citizens, not Japanese, live in Dok-do island and Japan has no right to claim its ownership or to distort history.

  1. Tensions are pretty high in that area right now, especially between North and South Korea. I really hope these countries can get past these issues and coexist peacefully.
